The West Nile Virus in Danbury
|
The 2002 West Nile Virus surveillance program of the Danbury Health & Housing Department identified nine positive crows. The identification of positive crows and the tracking of other species of dead birds enables the department to be aware of the onset and intensity of the West Nile Virus in the bird population.
However, the location of the positive crows does not mean that certain areas of the city had more virus than other areas of the city. Rather, it is a reflection of where people live and work. The crows that die in isolated areas are neither found nor reported. Once at least five positive crows were found, the virus was deemed to be well distributed in Danbury. No further testing would be conducted by the state's laboratory after the last submission of positive birds were identified.
